He has PAINTED these shapes within the space in this room so that at one single viewing point, BANG.....it looks like this shape is floating in free space.
Then he takes a photo, then he moves on to another.

I have seen pictures of a car park where all the signage is doen like this, in fact it's The Eureka Car Park, in Melbourne.
